INSTALL GUIDE

This guide covers installation of the XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ CP879 head stud kit for the 1993–2002 7.3L Ford Power Stroke. The 7.3L install has two details that trip people up — a dual-length stud layout and two separate torque sequences — and this guide covers both. Prefer a printable copy? Download the PDF manual.

Why the 7.3L Power Stroke needs head studs

Factory OEM head bolts are torque-to-yield: you torque them to a specified value, then add a final 90° rotation that stretches the bolt to its maximum point. That works at stock power levels. But when you add parts that increase horsepower — a turbocharger, injectors, a tuner — you create higher cylinder pressures lower in your RPM range, and the clamping force securing the gasket, head, and block is no longer sufficient. The result: a blown head gasket.

Head studs are engineered to resist stretching. XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ head studs are manufactured from our premium XOTIC 7200 steel alloy, superior in tensile strength to any bolt, and backed by a lifetime warranty. The key to getting that strength into your engine is accurate preload — the tensile force generated when a fastener is tightened, creating clamp force in the joint. Everything in this guide is in service of achieving equal, accurate preload across all 36 studs.

What's in the CP879 kit

  • 36 × head studs (XOTIC 7200 alloy) — 28 × M12-174mm, 8 × M12-168mm
  • 36 × hardened parallel washers
  • 36 × nuts
  • 1 × socket
  • 1 × allen wrench
  • 1 × fastener assembly lubricant

Before you start: verify first

Confirm that part number CP879 is compatible with your application (1993–2002 7.3L Ford Power Stroke) before installing any components. Inspect all package contents and clean as necessary to ensure accurate installation. Report any obvious defects or shipping damage to us before proceeding.

This kit uses two different torque sequences. The first numbered sequence covers the 45 and 85 ft-lb passes. The final 125 ft-lb pass follows a second, different sequence. Both diagrams are in the PDF manual — don't run the final pass in the first sequence's order.

How to install head studs on a 7.3L Power Stroke

  1. Clean the block threads. Clean the threads in the block prior to installing the head studs to ensure accurate fitment and precise torque readings. A dedicated M12 x 1.75 thread chaser (CS304) makes this fast and protects the threads.
  2. Install the studs hand-tight — short studs on the intake side. Install the M12 × 168mm shorter studs in positions #4, 5, 12, and 13 of the Step 1 torque sequence, along the intake manifold side. Install the M12 × 174mm longer studs in all remaining positions. Thread the studs into the block by hand until snug; do not apply torque at this stage.
  3. Check stud height with a straightedge. Use a straightedge ruler to measure the distance from the mating surface (deck or main cap) to the top of each installed stud. Ensure all studs of the same length group sit level with each other (within 1 mm / 0.040”). Uneven height may indicate debris or incorrect thread engagement. Properly installed studs will bottom out smoothly and show uniform height across all positions. If a stud appears higher or lower than the others, remove it, re-clean the hole, and reinstall by hand. Do not use tools to force studs deeper. Incorrect stud seating can cause off-angle stress, uneven preload, or stud fracture during engine operation.
  4. Set the gasket and head. Install the head gasket and cylinder head, ensuring proper alignment.
  5. Clean the washer seating areas. Clean the washer seating surfaces on the cylinder head with a fast-evaporating solvent such as non-chlorinated brake cleaner to remove oil, grease, and contaminants. A clean surface is essential for achieving proper fastener preload.
  6. Lubricate. Place the washers onto the studs. Using the supplied assembly lubricant, apply a thin coat to the stud threads, the underside of the nuts, and the top side of the washers.
  7. Install the nuts. Thread the nuts onto the studs and hand-tighten until they make contact with the washers.
  8. First torque sequence — two passes. Tighten the nuts in the manual's first sequence to 45 ft-lbs. Once all nuts are torqued, repeat the same sequence at 85 ft-lbs.
  9. Second torque sequence — final pass. Tighten all nuts using the manual's second sequence to a final torque of 125 ft-lbs.

2 85 ft-lbs First sequence
3 (final) 125 ft-lbs Second sequence

A common mistake to avoid: when torquing a fastener, do not stop short of the recommended value — continue in one motion until the specified torque is achieved. If you accidentally stop short, loosen the fastener and re-torque. Stopping short and "topping up" produces unequal preload distribution across the studs and risks joint failure.

Frequently asked questions

What are the torque specs for 7.3L Power Stroke head studs?

Three passes: 45 ft-lbs and 85 ft-lbs following the manual's first sequence, then a final pass at 125 ft-lbs following the manual's second sequence.

Why does the 7.3L use two torque sequences?

The manual specifies one numbered order for the first two passes and a separate order for the final pass. Follow both diagrams exactly as printed — the sequence controls how clamping load spreads across the head as preload builds.

Which positions get the shorter 168mm studs?

Positions #4, 5, 12, and 13 of the Step 1 torque sequence, along the intake manifold side. The 174mm studs fill all remaining positions.

Can I buy a single replacement stud?

Yes — both lengths are available individually: the M12 × 174mm single stud and the M12 × 168mm single stud.

OPTIMUM DESIGN

Broached stud ends make cylinder head install & removal easier. Engineered to unleash more performance out of your vehicle. Ample clamping strength prevents cylinder heads from lifting.

ULTRA CLAMPING FORCE

Unleash the full potential of your diesel engine with head studs designed to for ultra-high clamping force that greatly exceeds the standard, factory-made bolts. These studs are engineered to retain the cylinder seal even under the extreme pressure of today's high-performance turbo systems.

PROVEN TENSILE STRENGTH

XOTIC 7200 material properties allow for far greater tensile strength compared to 8740 Chromoly steel head studs. Threads are rolled after heat treatment for optimum fatigue strength.
