Aerospace-Grade Durability

Crafted from 8740 chromoly steel, these rod bolts are designed to withstand extreme conditions, offering unparalleled strength and reliability for high-performance Dodge 5.9 Cummins Diesel engines.

Exact Fit for Optimal Performance

Engineered specifically for Dodge 5.9 Cummins Diesel engines, this kit ensures a precise fit, maintaining engine integrity and preventing rod bolt failures during high-stress operations.

Superior Clamping Power

Featuring an advanced thread design, these bolts provide exceptional clamping force, significantly reducing the risk of bolt stretch and engine damage under intense pressure.

Rust and Corrosion Protection

Finished with a durable black oxide coating, these bolts are highly resistant to rust and corrosion, ensuring long-lasting performance even in the harshest environments.

INSTALL GUIDE

This guide covers installation of the XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ CP114 connecting rod bolt kit for the 5.9L 12V and 24V Dodge Cummins. Prefer a printable copy? Download the PDF manual.

Angled rod caps only. Cummins used more than one rod design across the 5.9L's long production run, and CP114 fits the angled-split rod only. Pull a cap and look at the parting line before you order: if it splits square across the big end rather than on a diagonal, this is not your kit. Also write down the free length of every bolt before it goes in — the manual's replacement limit is 0.001" of growth, and that number is meaningless without a baseline.

Why rod bolts matter more than any other fastener in the engine

Every other fastener in an engine sees load in one direction. A rod bolt sees it in both, thousands of times a minute. At the top of the exhaust stroke the piston and rod are decelerating hard and trying to pull the cap off the rod; a fraction of a revolution later, combustion slams the whole assembly back the other way. That reversal makes rod bolts the highest-cycle, highest-consequence fastener in the engine — and a wear item rather than a permanent part.

On a built 5.9L that picture gets much sharper. A P-pumped 12V or a big-fuel 24V spinning past its factory rev limit is asking the rod bolts to hold a heavier piston assembly against greater inertial load and higher peak cylinder pressure at the same time. XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ rod bolts are manufactured from our premium XOTIC 7200 steel alloy — substantially higher tensile strength than the factory hardware — and backed by a lifetime warranty.

What's in the CP114 kit

  • 12 × connecting rod bolts (XOTIC 7200 alloy)
  • 1 × socket
  • 1 × fastener assembly lubricant

Before you start: verify first

Confirm that part number CP114 is compatible with your application — specifically that your rods use angled caps — before installing any components. Inspect the connecting rods, caps and bearings for cracks, wear or damage, and replace anything questionable rather than reassembling around it.

How to install connecting rod bolts on a 5.9L Cummins

  1. Clean everything. Clean all bolts, threads and mating surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, debris and oil. Contamination in the joint changes the friction your torque wrench reads.
  2. Lubricate with the supplied lubricant only. Use only the fastener lubricant provided, applied evenly to the threads and under the bolt head, for consistent clamping force.
  3. Assemble the rotating assembly. Install bearings and pistons per the manufacturer's guidelines, seat the connecting rods on the crankshaft, and refit each cap in its original orientation. Caps are machined with their rods and are not interchangeable.
  4. Hand-thread each bolt. Run each bolt in until snug, verifying alignment and seating before any torque goes on.
  5. Torque in two stages. Snug all bolts to 10 ft-lbs first, then bring them to a final 95 ft-lbs.
  6. Re-check and record. Verify uniform torque across every bolt and document the original bolt lengths for future comparison.
  7. At the next teardown, measure. Compare each bolt against its recorded length. Replace any bolt stretched more than 0.001" or showing galling or damage.

5.9L Cummins connecting rod bolt torque specs

Stage Torque
1 (snug) 10 ft-lbs
2 (final) 95 ft-lbs

A common mistake to avoid: substituting your own lubricant. Torque is a proxy for preload, and the relationship between them depends entirely on friction. Motor oil under the head of a rod bolt can leave you 20% or more short of the clamp load the spec assumes — on the one fastener in the engine that has no margin for it. Use the supplied lubricant, on the threads and under the head.

Frequently asked questions

What is the rod bolt torque spec for a 5.9L Cummins?

Snug all bolts to 10 ft-lbs, then final-torque to 95 ft-lbs using the supplied fastener lubricant.

How do I tell if my rods have angled caps?

Look at the parting line on the big end. An angled-cap rod splits on a diagonal so the assembly can pass up through the bore; a straight-cap rod splits square across. CP114 is for the angled design only.

Can rod bolts be reused?

Only if you measured them going in. Compare each bolt to its recorded free length at teardown — anything that has grown more than 0.001", or shows galling or thread damage, gets replaced. Without a baseline, replace them.

Do the caps have to go back on the same rods?

Yes, and in the same orientation. Rod caps are machined in place with their rods; swapping or flipping one leaves you with a big-end bore that is no longer round.
