Lubricate all three contact surfaces, or the torque figure means nothing. This is one bolt holding the entire front-of-engine stack, so the job comes down to reaching the right clamp load once. The manual calls for assembly lubricant on the threads, underneath the bolt head, and on the washer face that contacts the balancer. Skip any of the three and the wrench reaches 90 ft-lbs before the joint is properly loaded.
Why the balancer bolt matters on a 6.7L
A modern diesel's torsional pulses are the harshest thing a crankshaft nose ever sees — very high peak cylinder pressure on a heavy rotating assembly, and a 6.7L that's been tuned is producing considerably more of it than Ford specified. The harmonic balancer exists to damp exactly that, and the balancer bolt is what keeps it clamped to the snout so it can.
When the bolt loses clamp load, the balancer starts to move on the snout. That wears the interface, throws the balancer out of true, and can eventually damage the crank — a repair that means the engine comes out. Confirm that part number CP240 is compatible with your engine before installing any components. Inspect all package contents for damage and report anything you find.
How to install a harmonic balancer bolt on a 6.7L Power Stroke
- Clean everything. Clean all parts thoroughly, including the bolt threads and the end of the crankshaft, to remove all dirt and foreign oils.
- Lubricate in three places. Spread the assembly lubricant included in the package on the threads, underneath the bolt head, and on the face of the washer that contacts the balancer.
- Install hand-tight. Thread the bolt in by hand and confirm the balancer is fully seated on the snout before applying any torque.
- Torque to 90 ft-lbs. Bring the bolt to final torque with the crank locked so the engine can't turn.

A common mistake to avoid: using the balancer bolt to draw the balancer onto the crank snout. It isn't an installation tool. Use a proper balancer installer, get the balancer fully seated, and only then fit the bolt — pulling it on with the bolt loads the crank snout threads in a way they were never designed for.

Why does lubrication change things so much?
Because torque is only a proxy for clamp load, and most of the torque you apply is spent overcoming friction rather than stretching the bolt. Change the friction and you change the clamp load you get at the same wrench reading — the spec assumes the lubricant in the box.
Do I need to lock the crank?
Yes. Use a flywheel or flexplate holding tool rather than jamming the ring gear.
Should I replace the balancer bolt every time it comes out?
If the front of the engine is apart, it's inexpensive insurance. The bolt costs a fraction of what a damaged crank snout does.
