XOTIC 7200 / Material comparison

Tensile & yield strength.

Two measures of strength. Explore the comparison for XOTIC 7200 alloy and 8740 chromoly steel.

Tensile strength

The maximum tensile stress a material withstands before failure.

Original tensile comparison diagram: XOTIC 7200, 232K PSI, in solid blue; 8740 chromoly steel, 222K PSI, in dashed graphite.

Strength specification

The published tensile-strength range for XOTIC 7200 head studs is 220,000–240,000 psi. Tensile strength describes the material under tension; it is not an installed clamping-force or horsepower rating.

05 / Understand the connection

How a head stud works.

The stud stays in tension. The head and gasket stay clamped. See how the parts work together.

Inside the connection
A head stud in cross-section A blue stud threads into the engine block and passes through a clearance hole in the cylinder head. A nut and washer sit above the head. Tightening the nut stretches the stud slightly and compresses the head and gasket against the block. White arrows show tension in the stud; blue arrows show the clamping forces on the joint. 3 4 2 1 5 6
