The factory Coyote crank bolt is single-use — this one isn't. Ford's original fastener is torque-to-yield: it's designed to stretch past its elastic limit on first installation and is not reusable once removed. That's the main reason this bolt gets replaced at all, and it's why the procedure here is a straight torque value rather than a torque-plus-angle sequence. Follow the spec below, not the factory service figure.
Why the balancer bolt matters on a Coyote
The harmonic balancer bolt is a single fastener doing two jobs. It clamps the balancer onto the crank snout so it can't walk, and it holds the front-of-engine stack in place against exactly the torsional pulses the balancer exists to absorb. On a Coyote — an engine that revs to 7,000-plus in stock form and considerably harder in a built one — that stack is being shaken continuously.
A balancer that works loose wears its interface with the crank snout, and damage there is the kind that ends with the crankshaft out of the car. Because it's one bolt, everything depends on achieving the right clamp load, which is why the lubrication instruction below is not optional detail. XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ fasteners are manufactured from our premium XOTIC 7200 steel alloy and backed by a lifetime warranty.
Before you start: verify first
Confirm that part number CP238 is compatible with your engine before installing any components. Inspect all package contents for damage and report anything you find.
How to install a harmonic balancer bolt on a 5.0L Coyote
- Clean everything. Clean all parts thoroughly, including the bolt threads and the end of the crankshaft, to remove all dirt and foreign oils.
- Lubricate in three places. Spread the assembly lubricant included in the package on the threads, underneath the bolt head, and on the face of the washer that contacts the balancer.
- Install hand-tight. Thread the bolt in by hand and confirm the balancer is fully seated on the snout before applying any torque.
- Torque to 110 ft-lbs. Bring the bolt to final torque with the crank locked so the engine can't turn.
Coyote harmonic balancer bolt torque spec
| Fastener | Torque |
|---|---|
| Harmonic balancer bolt | 110 ft-lbs |
A common mistake to avoid: using the balancer bolt to draw the balancer onto the crank snout. It isn't an installation tool. Use a proper balancer installer, get the balancer fully seated, and only then fit the bolt — pulling it on with the bolt loads the crank snout threads in a way they were never designed for.
Frequently asked questions
What is the balancer bolt torque spec for a 5.0L Coyote?
110 ft-lbs, with assembly lubricant on the threads, under the bolt head, and on the washer face that contacts the balancer.
Can I reuse the factory Coyote crank bolt?
No. Ford's bolt is torque-to-yield and single-use — it is designed to stretch permanently on first installation. Once it comes out, it gets replaced.
Why not a torque-plus-angle procedure?
Angle sequences exist to get repeatable preload out of a fastener that's being taken past yield. This bolt isn't, so a direct torque value with controlled lubrication gets you there more accurately.
Do I need to lock the crank?
Yes. At 110 ft-lbs the engine will turn over otherwise. Use a flywheel or flexplate holding tool rather than jamming the ring gear.
