INSTALL GUIDE

No washers — and check the chamfer before you start. These bolts install directly against the flexplate. Confirm the flexplate has an adequate chamfer around each bolt hole to clear the radius under the bolt head. If the head is riding on that radius instead of sitting flat on the flexplate, the joint can't reach proper clamp load no matter what your torque wrench says.
Why flexplate bolts deserve attention
Flexplate bolts hold a thin steel plate — carrying the ring gear and the torque converter — to the end of the crankshaft, and they do it through a load case that never lets up. Every combustion event tries to accelerate the crank; the converter's fluid coupling resists. On a diesel, those pulses are large and the flexplate itself flexes by design, which means the joint is being worked constantly rather than held statically.
Cracked flexplates are a known 5.9L failure, and loose bolts are frequently how it starts: once clamp load drops, the plate begins to move against the crank flange, the holes elongate, and cracks propagate from there. If you're already back there, this is the cheapest fastener in the whole driveline to get right. XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ fasteners are manufactured from our premium XOTIC 7200 steel alloy and backed by a lifetime warranty.
Before you start: verify first
Confirm that part number FP100 is compatible with your application before installing any components. Inspect the flexplate itself for cracks around the bolt holes and at the ring gear — a new set of bolts will not save a plate that has already started to fail. Report any product damage to us before proceeding.
How to install flexplate bolts on a 5.9L Cummins
- Do not use washers. These bolts go in without washers. Ensure the flexplate has an adequate chamfer around the bolt holes to clear the bolt head radius.
- Lubricate under the heads. Use the provided assembly lubricant under the head of each bolt. This reduces friction and allows for accurate torque readings.
- Fit the flexplate and hand-tighten. Place the flexplate onto the crankshaft and run all bolts in by hand before any torque goes on.
- Torque to 125 ft-lbs in an alternating cross pattern. Work across the plate rather than around it, so pressure is distributed evenly as the joint pulls up.
5.9L Cummins flexplate bolt torque spec
| Fastener | Torque | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Flexplate bolts | 125 ft-lbs | Alternating cross pattern |
A common mistake to avoid: adding washers because it feels like good practice. It isn't, here — the joint was designed around the bolt head bearing directly on a chamfered flexplate, and adding a washer changes the grip length and the bearing geometry. Fit them as the manual specifies.
Frequently asked questions
What is the flexplate bolt torque spec for a 5.9L Cummins?
125 ft-lbs, applied in an alternating cross pattern with assembly lubricant under each bolt head and no washers.
Why no washers?
Because the flexplate is chamfered around each hole to accept the bolt head directly. Adding a washer changes the bearing surface and the effective grip length of the fastener — neither of which the joint was designed around.
Manual transmission — do I need this kit?
No. A manual truck uses a flywheel; see the 5.9L Cummins flywheel bolt guide (FW102).
Do I need to lock the crank?
Yes. At 125 ft-lbs the engine will turn over otherwise. Use a proper holding tool rather than jamming the ring gear.
