6.7L Power Stroke Flywheel Bolt Installation Guide (2011–2023) — FW103
This guide covers installation of the XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ FW103 flywheel bolt kit for the 2011–2023 6.7L Ford Power Stroke. Prefer a printable copy? Download the PDF manual.
Washer orientation matters — chamfer toward the bolt head. The supplied washers have a chamfered inner diameter on one face. That chamfer must face up, toward the underside of the bolt head, so it clears the fillet radius where the shank meets the head. Installed the other way round, the washer sits on the radius instead of flat on the flywheel, and the joint never reaches proper clamp load.
Why flywheel bolts deserve attention
The flywheel bolts are the only thing holding a heavy spinning mass to the end of your crankshaft, and they see a load case most fasteners never do: constant torsional reversal. Every combustion event tries to accelerate the crank; the flywheel's inertia resists; the joint has to hold through both. On a manual-transmission 6.7L that also means absorbing clutch engagement shock from an engine making very large torque numbers, tuned or not.
When a flywheel bolt loosens it does not fail quietly. The joint frets, the bolt holes elongate, and the crank flange — a part you cannot replace without pulling the engine — gets damaged. This is a low-cost, high-consequence fastener. XOTIC PERFORMANCE™ flywheel bolts are manufactured from our premium XOTIC 7200 steel alloy and backed by a lifetime warranty.
Before you start: verify first
Confirm that part number FW103 is compatible with your application before installing any components. Inspect all components for damage and report anything you find. Clean the crank flange and the flywheel's mating face before assembly.
How to install flywheel bolts on a 6.7L Power Stroke
- Inspect first. Before installing any components, check for product damage and report anything you find.
- Fit the washers chamfer-up. Use the supplied washers and install them with the chamfered side facing the underside of the bolt head.
- Lubricate under the heads. Use the provided assembly lubricant under the head of each bolt. This reduces friction and allows for accurate torque readings.
- Fit the flywheel and hand-tighten. Place the flywheel onto the crankshaft and run all bolts in by hand before any torque goes on.
- Torque to 95 ft-lbs in a cross pattern. Work across the flywheel rather than around it, so pressure is distributed evenly as the joint pulls up.
6.7L Power Stroke flywheel bolt torque spec
| Fastener | Torque | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Flywheel bolts | 95 ft-lbs | Cross pattern |
A common mistake to avoid: torquing around the circle instead of across it. Going bolt-to-adjacent-bolt pulls one side of the flywheel down before the other and can leave the assembly sitting slightly cocked on the flange — which shows up later as runout and vibration. Always work in a cross pattern.
Frequently asked questions
What is the flywheel bolt torque spec for a 6.7L Power Stroke?
95 ft-lbs, applied in a cross pattern with the washers chamfer-up and assembly lubricant under each bolt head.
Which way do the washers go?
Chamfered side up, toward the underside of the bolt head. The chamfer exists to clear the radius under the head; flipped over, the washer rides on that radius instead of sitting flat.
Why lubricate under the bolt head?
Because most of the torque you apply is consumed by friction, and a large share of that is at the bearing face under the head. Without lubricant the wrench reads 95 ft-lbs before the bolt reaches the intended clamp load.
Automatic transmission — do I need this kit?
No. An automatic uses a flexplate rather than a flywheel; see the 6.7L flexplate bolt guide (FP102).
